It was a successful week of filming in the Bahamas for “Putting the Pieces Together.” Stocking Island, a part of the Exumas, played host to the filmmakers and restoration participants. Volunteers gathered to be a part of the effort to repair a ship-damaged reef. Lost in the accident were stands of endangered staghorn and elkhorn coral that were reduced to fragments.

In Development
Starting in the 1980's, large swaths of hard coral reefs turned white and died. By the 1990s, these mass bleaching events, where colonies that were hundreds, even thousands of years old, suddenly disappear, became an alarming trend. Coral reefs occupy a sliver of the oceans, but are one of the most biodiverse ecosystems on our planet - and an essential part of a bountiful ocean. But corals are also highly sensitive to temperature, which puts their loss on the leading edge of climate change catastrophe.
